I know I’m not the only one who has been in a line at the grocery store or even sat on the beach, minding my own business, when someone near me is commenting in a hostile mode about the state of American politics and who belongs and who doesn’t.   The urge to respond in measure, with the same venom and spite, is hard to ward off.  And yet, doing the hard spiritual work of practicing kindness and promoting a sense of common values and goals has benefits, that are surely worth the effort.
