Early in my ministry, I met with many veterans of the war in SE Asia. I was among those marching in protest against that, so I listened with interest to their experience. There were no victory parades, many had been shamed by the very groups I walked with. I asked what might be helpful to their healing: “Just don’t forget us. Have your Memorial Day picnics, but remember us.”
And so we will Memorial Day Sunday by naming those who served and who touched our lives. We will not say “Happy Memorial Day,” as it the memories are often hard. Instead, we will show gratitude.
